I have had problems with my 601 flooding and hard to start. I called a mechanic and he had me take the pipe from the air filter to the carberator loose at the carburator end. About a cup of fuel came out of the pipe! After that it was fine until the next time. I shut off the fuel from the tank, but it still has gas in the pipe.

You have one of a few things wrong with the carb.
1- Float is sticking or has a hole in it.
2- Junk is in the needle seat for the float and letting gas by.
3-Needle isn't seating like it should in the seat. Either way you will need to open up the carb to fix the problem, which means you need to put a kit in the carb unless you get luky and can save the gasket which is a 50/50 chance.

After shutting off the gas,the gas left in the gas line will be enough to flood the engine. The fuel line will leak down if the needle valve is leaking.Often the gasket between the seat and carb is shot or even missing, left out by wanna be mechanics.Hair and grass can get by the screens and make the inlet valve leak.A tiny speck of dirt can make the valve leak.I keep a bowl gasket on hand, dont need the kit.Take note of the crud that collects in the filter bowl, some does get by the screens.Never put the last bit of gas in your can into the tank, thats where the dirt and water are found.Use a milk filter in a funnel when adding gas from cans.A milk filter will block water if it is wet with gas first.

Thanks guys. A friend told me he thought it was the float. Might be time to rebuild the carb.
