Ford 3000 fuel system

I just drained the old fuel from a used 3000 diesel I just purchased and refueled with fresh diesel. Since then, the tractor does not want to run. I have removed the fuel line from the carburator/injectors and the pump is providing plenty of fuel to that point. If I apply either to the intake manifold, the tractor fires immediately. Consequently, I have concluded that the fuel system is the problem and air is perhaps the culprit. Is there a way to purge the system of air?

My diesel dosen't have a carburator. The fuel goes from the tank to the filter then to the pump then to the injectors. If you have fuel at the injectors and it dosen't run then the next thing to check is make sure you have bleed the system properly. First bleed the filter, then the pump, then each injector. Do this with the engine stop activated so it won't try and fire up on you when you are bleeding the system. Then if this dosent get you up and running you could still have a bad injectors or your injection pump timing is off.

If you pull the stop, no fuel will flow to injectors. When bleening injector lines, make sure stop is in, throttle is open and, where aplicable, excess fuel device is activated. So what if it starts? Just stop it and finish the job.

I tried bleeding the system at the injectors and it worked like a charm. With a little help from a squirt of either, she fired up nicely and ran well. My next question would be whether or not this tractor should have a "glow plug" or something to assist in cranking the engine. As far as I can tell, my tractor does not have one. There is a spot under the ignition key where there was some sort of switch or pull handle but no evidence as to what it was. Light & kill switch/lever are present. A choke perhaps?

There was a factory option that your tractor is wired for but which it may not have that works in the air intake system, I think. My ignition switch turns towards the left to preheat and to the right to start without preheat. Not sure how easy it will be to find after market replacement parts. It gets down to freezing where I live and I have never had mcuh of a problem starting as long as the battery is strong without using this feature.
Best wishes

How did you drain the fuel? If you syphoned it out and fefilled, I would say you stirred up crud in the bottom and it has plugged the suction strainer or filters. Assuming you opened up the fuel system you need to bleed the air out. Loosen the bleed screw(s) on the top of the fuel filter (and drain the filter while you are at it). Crack the injector lines at the injectors and crank until the air is out. There may or may not be a bleed screw on the injector pump. What kind of pump do you have straight or rotary?
