A friend of mine has an 861 that he says leaks gas like grazy and floods easily. Says he had it rebuilt last year and has had this problem ever since. First thing I notice is that it was put back together loosely. Neither of the four screws were very tight. Seat is bright shiney looks brand new. Needle looks good, rubber tipped type. Float looks OK no holes. The float was adjusted a little high. I cannot remember if there is supposed to be a spring and a clip that hold the needle and float together on this type of carb. Any help on this appreciated.

Boy if I had a $1 for every time I tell this I could by a couple cases of beer. LOL. Take that carb apart, remove the float and make sure the seat is good and tight. Then drop the needle in to the seat and tap on it with a very small hammer or something like that. What that does is sets the tip of the needle and most likely the problem will go bye bye. Got that from an old carb guy that has long since died. Only works on rubber tiped needles

Is there supposed to be a spring between the needle and the float?

Not really between but if it has one it is used to hold the needle to the float so its not as likely to stick closed. Some kits have them and some don't. If the needle has a head sort of thing on it instead of being all one side then yes it probably should have had one.
