How can I tell if my Ford is a 600 or a 601? Someone who painted it put 601 on the side, but that could be done no matter which it is. I see that some parts are listed differently for these 2 models.

I checked the number today and my tractor is a 600. The number was 640 so you guys, as usual, were right on.

I'll check the other number that was next to it. It's longer and will probably give me a clue as to the year. I just didn't have time today.

Yes the other # below the 640 will be the serial # and we can figure the year built from it.

In fact Jim UT has a book that breaks the serial #'s down month by month and based on how many were built in said month he can give you a good guess to the exact day it rolled of the line.

While finding the model # will tell us for sure..... ..... ..... ....

You could tell us if it has a small red light or hole for one on the left side of the dash. The light is a charging light.

The 601 has a charging light and the 600 has a amp gauge.

Other ways are..... ..... ..
Fuel sending unit in tank
Fuel gauge

That sure helps! It has an amp gauge so it must be a 600. I kind of thought the 601 was just what someone used a decal to add. It's no big deal to me, except when I need parts. I bought this used several years ago. I don't farm, but I have 67 acres of old strip mine land that I need to keep up. I also do a little bit of planting and try to add wildlife food plots where I can find the room.

You guys are a big help. Thanks!

A 600 will have a standard transmission,(with a clutch and shifter like a truck)a 601 will have a select-o-speed trans mission simular to a car. it too has a clutch but in stead of a normal shifter it has a gear selector under the steering wheel like a automatic that shows what gear you are in.

Sorry dude you have that all mixed up. The 600 series could have a 4 speed or others and the 601 could also have a number of differant trannys options. I go in to it deeper but don't want to type all the manual says about it. The first number tells engine size and type of tractor, the second number the tranny option and the third the year/series of the tractor. This is as per the book other then a few words

As Ken said and also. If say your number you find is 640 then its a 600 series and if it says 641 then its a 601 series. The middle number tells you want tranny option you have the 4 in this example means it has a 4 speed tranny.

To begin with 600 is just the series number . There was many different model numbers in that series . Now , how to locate the model number : on the flat area on top of bellhousing case just behind the bump of starter hole & under air cleaner is the stamped numbers you need . You may have to vary carefully remove the paint in that area to find it . Do not use a grinder or sander or you may remove the marking . Once you locate that number take a lead pencil & highlite the stampings for clarity . I think it's a good idea to highlite them with black or silver paint for better visibilty in the future when done . But don't fill the indentations with paint . I hope this helps, good luck . Ken
