I only have two blades on the engine fan is this a original or has it been debladed somehow? I have no fan shroud either, should I have one? I live kinda in the desert E WA. state so in the summer we see some 100 deg. days. bjr

Hi BJR,

While working yer tractor look at the temperature gauge. If it doesn't work spend $20 and buy one. If it says yer engine is fine dont worry about how bald yer fan is. If yer hot get a more blady fan or a shroud or clean yer rad. This will work even if it is a 1935 4000. :)

The reason for the two bladed fan is for the diesel engine to runner hotter than a gasoline engine. They also use a higher degree thermostat. Running hotter helps atomize the fuel for better combustion in the direct fuel injection engine.

We have been running a 971-d for many years with the 2 bladed fan. Even on hot days we never really had any heating problems if we kept the radiator clean. I think most tractors will heat if you let the radiator get all plugged up. Yes ours does have the shroud on it. I remember years ago I used to see a red glow out the exhaust pipe on a dark night in a hard pull. It still didn't heat though. By the way we always had a 4pound pressure cap.

bjr, two blades is correct for your 172" diesel, however, if its a 4000 its a 1963 or 1964 not 1962 and yes it did have a shroud and should have one....Kelly.

I have a '62 4000. Don't know when they started building them. Mine was built in late November of '62.

Bjr, you should have a shroud, but as at least one other has said, the 172 diesel engine had only a 2 bladed fan.

The 4000 industrial started production in late 1960 (I think November)
And the 4000 ag started production in mid 1962 (I think it was June or July)

Yep, I believe that's correct. Thanks for putting that time frame to it, John.

So, what your saying if its built in 1962 then its a 1962 Model? Like a 1947 8N? I don't think so.

The original Ag fan had 3 blades. Industrial versions had 6 blades. Both had shrouds.

You will probably need both a good fan and shroud to keep the engine cool when working it at high ambient temperatures.

Dean,

The diesel engines had 2 bald fans, even the industrial and the HD industrials too.

Larry,

Ha, you caught me!

But seriously, none of the fans on my tractors have any hair...

I am still chuckling... Bald fan!

OOps. Should have read the entire Subject. I missed the operative word "diesel."
