For the past few years I have been looking at a 641 ford tractor. It has the big heavy ford loader on it (not it good shape) and a pippen backhoe (not worth fixing, but has a couple good hyd cylinders). The tractor has complete factory power steering, the hi/lo transmission, and I know there is a hydraulic pump on the right side rear of the engine. Not much of the sheet metal is good. Oil pan has been off (bottom end shot). None of the electronics are good either. Wheels are good. He wanted $700 for it. I was going to take the power steering for my 55 850, but thought that would be just one more thing that I would have to maintain. But now I would like to buy it and just part it out.
Not sure what to do.

I agree, with the other's I'd sure buy it! What part of the country are you in? I might even be interested in the loader and hoe!

If I had such an opportunity, I would JUMP on it before someone else got it. Unless it is a real rag, I don't see how you could go wrong.

The loader, if complete is probably worth most of the $700. I bet there is someone out there who would think they could fix a backhoe attachment. The hi-low trans is a very desirable option, and would sell easily, with a value dependant on what it is and the shape it is in. The power steering is worth at least $500. There are all sorts of other things you could sell and maybe make some money with, and also help out guys who are looking for that specific part.

Or you could fix the engine and have a neat tractor with a lot of neat options for not too much money.

Do you have the room to store it? And the time to dismantle or fix it? Or would it just sit there, taking up space that you would like to use for something else? All questions you alone can answer. It sounds like a real good deal to me. Good luck, hope I find something like that sometime!

Financially you should come out ahead and have a free p/s system for your 850. If you sell that, too, you'll have an extra $500 (or so).

Headache-wise and spousal relations-wise, I don't know if you'll come out ahead or not.

I paid $500 for a 9N in pieces last October and caught some spousal abuse when I spent every night for a week out pulling parts until midnight. But I wanted all the sellable parts off before it snowed. Now that I have made back my $500 plus another $1600 by selling parts on ebay, she's much friendlier.

....you should offer him $600 or even $500. He might even say yes!

Apekim, I dont' think you can go wrong at the price. One thing, that Sherman Hi Lo transmission could be a reversing trans and not worth as much.....Kelly.

If it were around here (Tulsa) I would buy it just on the off chance I might be able to fix/utilize the back hoe.

If its a sherman hi/low its worth almost $700 if you find the right person and it works good.

I didn't realize that. I think I should stop by there again. I just don't want to raise hell with the wife.
Thanks

also its more likly to be a hi/low/standard instead of just a hi low which really isn't what any of them are any how. All the ones I know of are really high and standard or low and standard which means an over or under drive and the same gear it would have with out the sherman. If its a 3 speed which it probably is the shfter when in the center position will pull out to the side then go up which would put it in to the standard range. If you push it back in the pull up thats hi and down would be low

At that price, you should break even by selling the various ruined parts (backhoe)for scrap, and the transmission, and cylinders. So you'd have a 'free' p/s system. This is going by what those things woukd bring around here....
