Awhtx is right on serial# location and it is true that the paint will hide the numbers.
I have a 541 Offset with cultivators. I will have to sell it since I am moving off the farm after 50 years. Have used this tractor every year and kept it in good condition. Excellent for restoration. Few were made, it has got to be a classic. Interested? E-mail or phone 1-859-234-
3748.

If it is a true high crop it will be 541-4, with 38 in rear tires very rare. Might just be a regular 541 with 28 in tires. Check my 541 at: www.burthudson.com/tractors

The numbers are on a flat horizontal surface. If you stand to the left side of the tractor and look at the starter, then shift your gaze to the rear of the tractor about a foot, you'll see the flat spot I'm talking about. It's kind of below the starter solenoid and air cleaner. Below the flat spot are two empty bolt holes.

Here's the link to Burt's tractors.

541-4 is the model number and is stamped just above the serial number. You do not have to remove the starter to see the numbers. They are stamped into a flat spot on the transmission housing just aft (towards the rear of the tractor) from the starter. If the tractor has been repainted the paint may have filled in the numerals and you will need to remove it.

The serial # is just behind the starter on the flat spot on the bellhousing. $4500. doesn't sound to bad, depending the condition
