Recently move up in class from an 8n to a nice 861 Diesel. I am very happy with the 861 but I was looking at some spec's on HP and saw that the 861 Gas was rated 48 hp @belt / 41 hp @bar and the diesel was rated 41hp / 36hp. So I am a little confused. I thought the diesel was supposed to give more torque at the same speed as the gas therefore more hp, so what gives ? What am I missing ? The hp spec's were what I pulled from the Neb Test pages... curious Thanks ...Alan

My brother and I had '71 Ford 4000's that looked identical except his was a diesel and mine was gas. I believe they were both rated the same HP., but at the end of any day of hard plowing, the diesel had done more work. I also made a lot more trips to the fuel tank.

In the early diesel farm tractor era, before the advent of turbo charging, intercooling, etc, it was common practice for diesel versions of a specific model tractor to have more displacement than the gasoline version in order to produce comparable HP. Indeeed, Ford did this with the diesel versions of the 6xx series. Diesel versions are 144 C.I. while gasoline versions are 134 C.I.

For various reasons, Ford maintained the same displacement for the diesel versions of the 8xx series. As a result the diesels produce somewhat less HP but, as the others have said, use much less fuel and have more torque at low RPM and better torque rise.

The nearly universal use of diesel engines in modern farm tractors is demonstrative of the diesel engines better suitability to such equipment.

Hmm.. surprising. On the 5000, the gas maodel and diesel model are very similar. In fact.. gas is 1hp more than diesel eng power.

Pto hp is 1/10 less for diesel, and drawbar hp is 3hp less for the gas job.

In any case.. I wouldn't feel bad about having the diesel model over the gas model.

The diesel has its peak torque at a lower rpm. This helps it to pull better under load. You always want to operate at a speed above the peak torque so the engine will not bog down.
To get the real picture you have to look at the peak hp and torque and at what rpm they are at.

You are correct. The diesel is lower in both torque and hp. It is also about 1/2 the fuel consumption rate and about 2-3x LESS likely to overheat.

Nebraska tractor test lab. Both 881 Ford
Gas - At 2,200 rpm 46.16 pto hp 12.10 hp-hours per gallon
Diesel - At 2,200 rpm 41.36 pto hp 13.86 hp-hours per gallon

And if taken care of, frequent oil and filter changes, I'll bet it will last 2-3x longer between rebuilds. Plus a diesel has that sound.
