 Are you sure it's not a 971? in reply to ford-s, 01-31-2006 08:15:59
That number you posted- 310608 - are you sure it's not 310609? The 172 diesel engine has 310609 cast into the right side of the block. I don't know what number the 144 diesel block has.

The rear axle on an 800/801 is larger than the rear axle on a 600/601. I would assume the same applies to the 700/701 and 900/901 but I'm not sure. Maybe one of the experts will help you on that.
The engines (134G,144D,172G,172D) all have the same bolt pattern where the engine bolts to the transmission so it is also possible that you have a 771 with the larger 172D engine.

Re: serial nos. in reply to ford-s, 01-31-2006 08:15:59
Tractors from that era with diesel engines often have their serial numbers erased by years of leaking battery acid. Notice the battery is located directly above the area where the numbers should be. A 701 with SOS could only be 771 or 781 the difference being a 771 would have a single speed pto and the 781 would have a dual speed pto.
