Im looking for information on how to change rear end oil on a 4400 ford tractor. Where is the location of the site plug? Where is the fluid put in? Is there a special fluid used with these rear ends or can you use hydrolic oil? I would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you,
Bob

HYD oil is for hyds.. gear oil or UTF is for trannies and rear ends. Deffinately use hydraulic oil if you want to learn how to rebuild the rear end someday (joke)...

My 5000 manual also covers the 4000 and 4100's.. not sure if this applies to your 4400.. but rear end fill is a cap on the right rear of the center/rear end section, and level plug is a pipe plug on rear left, a few inches up from the bottom of the sump... drain plug will be obvious.

And gear oil is not for a 4400's hyds. in reply to souNdguy, 02-04-2006 21:06:07
Careful about telling folk to use gear oil in rear axles. The hydraulics are common with the rear axle on the 4400. As it is on two of your own tractors, SG.
The level plug is a 1/4" pipe plug located in front of the right rear axle housing. This reservior should be filled with New Holland 134D oil or its equivalent.

He really needs to get his own manual. I did state that my manual only covered the 4000/4100 and may not cover his...

Considering his tractor is a multi-thousand dollar unit, he should be able to pop for a 12$ manual.

His question led me to believe he had a seperate sump as he asked how to change his rear axle oil, ( not his hyds / trans / rear axle oil ).

As I found out on that 5000, it was real easy to tell it was single sump once you had the plugs out and could pour oil in the tranny and get it to run out the diffy level check plug..

I use 90 in the differential on my 600.134 thins badly when hot.I can lift 8 foot hardwood logs 16 inches in diameter on my carry all in cold weather. In hot weather 5 bales of hay is too much.Pump is worn but I will get that 134 out of the hydraulic system this spring.I read a piece in the 9n newsletter that said the 134 may be ok in new tractors but will give problems with old tractors with worn pumpsI have lifted 1000 pounds of concrete forms when the oil is cold. 200 pound is too much on a hot day.

Might try aw46.. or heavier hyd only oil in your 660. So far I've got the 134d in my 660 and the rear lift will pull 800 easy.. and fel will lift a thousand for sure.. that's all I had on it anyway.. but then.. I think the prev owner did a hyd overhaul when he got the loader.. I see new topcover gaskets, and pump shows signs that it was R&R'd.
