I recently tore down the engine from my 871 diesel to address the dwindling oil pressure issue. I knew it had a small crack in the block but now we know the block has more cracks and the head is cracked too. I suppose the previous owner either let it get too hot, or maybe too cold! Anyway it looks like I may as well start searching for another engine. I have considered converting to gas but I kinda like the diesel and I keeping thinking of more and more parts nessary to make the conversion. Does anyone have opinions or experience on dependable salvage yards. I live in southern Ohio and if much further than a couple hundred miles, I would have to depend on them to ship a reasonably good engine without even seeing it. Another idea would be finding a complete tractor in my area with a bad tranny or rear end. Whatta ya think?

Below is a place that has a head, the price sounds reasonable. Call this number for a bare block 1-800-231-6876, they are good and will have the block clean and checked for cracks, plus they guarantee it. I bought one about a year ago, I think the price was $250 picked up. They can also make you a short block. The freight on it will not be bad, shipped to you. My thoughts on buying a parts tractor, you might buy one worse than what you have.

Doug,

Your cheapest bet is to find a "parts" tractor and use it's engine. Then ebay off the parts you don't need.

Full rebuild on a 172 D (with complete balancing) is at least $1500. If you have to buy a core block and head on top of that.... Well you can easily justify spending 2000 on a tractor, just to get the engine! A complete 4 or 5 speed goes for $800 to $1200, a rear end can get $500 to $1000. Fenders and hood can bring a couple hundred.

Dang, I think I just talked myself into going tractor shopping...

Repair block head in reply to Doug Carmean, 02-04-2006 22:09:37
I'm just gonna throw this out here. Is it possible to weld repair the block & head by a reputable block repair company located in your area. I've seen some amazing results here on the west coast by different companies that specialize in that. I know there shipping involved with that. Just a thought. bjr

BJR--- My engine went to a shop where they can identify and repair cracks the right way. they put the whole block in an oven till its red hot. weld while hot, return it to the oven and cool very slowly. They advised me it would be cheaper to find a good block and head. Doug

Here is a nationwide tractor salvage site. Someone should have what you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't go to gas, I would try and find what I needed to put your engine back. Sounds like all you need is a good block and head.If you can't find the parts local and will have to depend on someones word I would recommend Alexander's in Texas. Specialize in Ford only. Mid-South salvage in Decatur AL is another good one. Might try Elkton Farm Store in Elkton, TN. If interested I can get the phone numbers for you. Good Luck

These engines were also used in other kinds of equipment. That might be an additional source. I had a similar problem with a busted crank and block in a non balanced engine. Got a nice rebuilder out of an air compressor. Chuck Palmer

Doug:

I can attest to Ken's recommendation of Rod. I have done a bit of business with him and have been well satisfied.

Since you are in Southern OH, Roberts Farm Equipment is probably not too far away. Not the least expensive place around or the easiest to deal with but a sizeable salvage yard. They are less than 10 miles north of Oxford in Morning Sun. You can Google them up or find their ebay store.

Watch ebay . Also I know a guy who sells used Ford tractor parts . If it's junk , he won't sell it ; believe me . I've bought some nice parts from him . Sometimes I've had to wait till he got a part in that satisfied him before I got it . Also he will guarantee your satisfaction or return it . His name is Rod Rippee . Email is : rip@charterinternet.com . Tell him I sent you please . Good luck .Ken
