Clicking noise in a 4 speed transmission

I have located an 841D that has a clicking noise coming from the transmission. With the trans in neutral and the clutch released I started it and heard the clicking. The frequency increases with increased engine RPM. I didn't drive it but the owner said the noise decreases when the trans is under a load. Does this sound like a bad bearing or a tooth chipped off one of the gears?
The tractor is ugly but the engine runs good and the tires are fair. Is it worth $1500?

Doug,

You should be able to sell the engine and the rear end for more than 1500, so it is worth it.

The clicking noise is probably a chipped tooth on a gear that pinwheels when in N. Open the trans top and take a look. Might be able to get the price below 1500 if you can see a bad tooth...

Open it up and let us know what you see!

Sounds like a chipped gear to me. I'm not an expert. I believe if it were a bearing, you would hear a steady rumbling or growling. Why did'nt ya drive it? I have a IH 350U that has a clicking chipped tooth on 4th gear so I just avoid that gear. I'm a little puzzled that it does it in netural unless it's the PTO drive gear.. I wonder if reverse idler stays engaged with the main shaft?? If you do buy the tractor and the tranny bites the dust, I'm looking for a diesel engine. Where do you live? Doug-- Ohio

I'm in Central Texas. I didn't mess with it because it was too cold and windy here yesterday. I'll go back and see if he will let me pull the top cover when it's warmer.
