i have just purchased a ford tractor and can't tell for sure what it is. the guy i bought it from said it was a "600", but the stickers say ford 2000. the serial number (21201 7904) also suggests it is a 2000 as do the date codes on the axle housings (h102,h172). i believe it is a 62 model 2000. the only problem i have is that the sheet metal looks like a 601 series and i haven't found a picture yet that looks like that for the 2000. did the first 2000's look like that? i know most of the books group these tractors together since they had a lot of similiar parts. i would like to restore this tractor but need some help to get it right. this is the first tractor i've ever owned.

You have a 2000 ag tractor built in late 1962 and should be painted blue/gray or at least that is what the trans is out of.
The X000 ag tractors started production in July 62. 1962 was one of those 1/2 and 1/2 years where they built the 601 the first half of the year and the 2000 the second half.

I have always thought there was a cross over of parts but was corrected in the past by Tony Jacobs who knows these old tractors better than most. He told me that his info showed that 601 production stopped and 2000 production started with no cross over of parts.

So should yours have a emblem on the hood??? Not from what I have been told.

You can not use pictures from industrial models to compare because these started production in Dec 1960 and they did have the round emblem.

Well John,

How are you doing after Katrina? I'm an inlander, but had plenty of expense associated with Katrina and Rita.

And, something I stumbled across. Some people don't know that the 2 or 4 preceeding the model number indicates the 000 series. They see a little red on a part and think the tractor is a blue painted over 00 series. Not necessarily so. Either Ford used red lead primer, or painted over their 00 series during the mfg process of the 000 series. Have gotten some good deals because of that confusion.

of this page under "Galleries" and "Tractor Photos". Look at the 1962 and 1964 2000's. Is that what yours looks like?

that"s the problem! if you look at those photos some have the flat top grill and some have the medallion. the pics of the lcg tractors all seem to have the medallion, like mine. but mine is not an lcg. the 62,63,64 ag tractors all seem to have the flat top grill but mine doesn"t. from what i understand, from the serial numbers mine has (21201) it is the ag model. the pics of the industrials also seem to have the medallion. who knows????

According to the model number decoder in the I&T manual the first "1" in your model indicates an ag or industrial model produced in 1963 or later. The date codes you found indicate August 1962. When does the new model year start for tractors? Was Ford building 1963 model tractors in Aug 1962 like they do with the autos? It appears so. As Doug Hayes stated you may have one of the very first 2000's made and Ford was still using up all of the old sheet metal they had on hand.

i have no manuals to tell me any of this but, according to all the serial number data i have found on the net the set of numbers under the model number -7904- would indicate a 62 model. unless i'm mistaken this site and a few others say the 63 model started at 11*** something.

Jim.UT- can you help us here? in reply to stormhunter, 02-20-2006 08:22:11
I believe Jim.UT has the serial number breakdowns for monthly production. Maybe he will jump in here and help. If he doesn't see this post a question for him.

The 2000 went into production along side the 601 series in 1962. I believe I read somewhere that the very early ones did in fact share the same sheetmetal. It was not uncommon for Ford to deplete the existing parts during a model change. You may have stumbled upon one of these early production models.

The ford (early)2000 is very similar to the 601 series. I have a 661 and recetly finished going through a 4 speed 2000. The sheet metal is identical with the exception of the hood which has what appears to be a small styled, not functional air intake,a different grill, no nosecone medallion also.

The 2000 is blue.
The 601 is red.

Mechanically, they are identical.

Both units have a fuel gauge, and charging system warning light, unlike the earlier 600 series which had no fuel gauge but does have amp gauge.

There is a great picture of a 2000 on the cover of "Ford Farm Tractors" by Randy Leffingwell.

Also, just to add to the confusion there are early and late 2000 series tractors. The "late" variety, built after your unit are entirely different mechanically and cosmetically.
