Hello. I bought a 1973 Ford 4000 recently. It seems to be in good condition except it will not start without ether even when the temperature is in the 50s. Is this normal for a Ford 4000 or do you think I have a problem. I've had other tractors, but this is my first Ford. Thanks!

One of the Fords I bought was bought in April. Seller used ether to get it running.....we're in Texas, not Alaska.

After the $1000 overhaul fact, I realized that you only need ether in the winter. Otherwise you have problems. Price you have to pay for being a dumb A$$.

realize that diesel engines run on the fact that diesel fuel explodes upon compression without an ignition source (spark plug). so, engine compression is essential for diesel starting/operating. if all else looks right, run a compression test. my ford diesel starts in below freezing temps, sitting outside, with no starting aids. hth

same problem with my 1973 ford 4000 diesel. when cold (below 55 deg) it will not start. some of these tractors had a thermostart option to help it along(diesel only). check along the intake manifold for a thermostart and if none, than ether is the best way to go. just be very careful with ether and use only a what is needed to get it started. do not flood the intake pipe with it! ether can cause engine damage very quickly if used wrong. maybe check out a block heater assembly from ford/new holland dealer and make sure you have a good battery. the 4DLT is the best battery to use because of it's size and reserve capacity.

You don't say if it is gas or diesel. If it is gas this is how mine starts best. Throttle as idle or just hair above. Turn key to engauge starter and then use the choke if it doesn't start with out it. Once it fires add more choke to keep it running before opening throttle. I hope this helps you.
