I looked at an 861 last Sturday; all original unsestored condition. It spent alot of time out in the weather, with little paint left, lots of surface rust, but fairly straight sheet metal. Tires are less than 10 yrs old. The big problem is that the engine broke 8 months ago. The fellow has it all torm apart; engine out of the tractor. Has valve frozen in the head, broken cam follower, and damaged camshaft. It's rather intimidating when parts are all over the place and someone else took it apart; but I would like the tractor as a project. But I am concerned about how much I might have invested by the time I get the engine rebuilt and everything back together. The loader is a Ford 703 heavy duty; it sits out in the yard; solid but leaking hydraulic cylinders. Neither of us wants to cheat the other but neither he nor I sure of what a fair price would be. The fellow also reads this board so your advise will be helping us decide on a fair price? Thanks for the help.

Hey Bill, hows the 4000 working out?If I was considering purchasing this tractor I'd make sure everything was there ir itis all apart(sheet metal, generator, air cleaner assy etc.) anything else that might be removed. If the loader has a trip bucket it is worth $3-400, if it has it's own pump and hyd bucket maybe $5-600 tops. Then you have a tractor that will need at least a cam andthe head rebuilt, if it,s been apart outside awhile you ll be looking at rusty sleeeves etc. While it's apart I'd probably put a sleeve kit in and check rod and main bearings. If it sat around long enough to havea valve seize in the guide it could have a suck ring or2 sothe best way to be sure is fix it right the first time. The tractor as described would'nt be worht more tahn $6-800 , add the value of the loader and there is a ballpark figure. I'd look real close at the front end pivot pin and whole front end for excessive wear from carrying a loader for years, also does it have p/s? It will make a lot beter loader tractor withP/s. Good luck- John

There was an ad in an Ottawa, Canada paper last week advertising a Massy-Harris tractor, 'completely restored in show room condition' for $1700CAN. Wonder if the tractor was a basket case to start with. Wonder how much was invested. Maybe the price was a typo. Such things can be pleasant, but expensive hobbies. However, they are hobbies and it's best not to rely on a hobby to get work done.

Myself, I had a '52 Nash-Healey for six years. It took most of my money to keep it on the road for three of those years. Of course, I was thinking of it as transportation rather than a hobby. It did cure me of such things though.

Last time you posted some of us said $500 and one said $1500. So split the differance and go for a $1000. If you do all the work yourself its going to cost close to a $500-$1000 to fix the engine this doesnt count accutaully overhauling it which you might want to do. Look up some of the parts cost at the suppliers at the left and see what you think. It looks like having the head worked, then you want to replace the cam both front and one rear cam gears and all the lifters. On an 860 if the clutch is bad its $500. You might approach it a different way and look at what your buying that is seviceable and the value of those.
xmission-$500
rear-$300-400
sheetmetal-$100-200
radiator-$50
You might call some of the used parts dealers and get their prices. I would probably take 20% off the final figure to make up for the time it would take to remove and ship parts and whatever doesnt sell in a reasonable time. Choice three, why hasnt this tractor already sold, what are some of the other offers on it? If it hasnt been advertised, do it then pay $1 over his hightest offer.

Consider the tractors value as parts only. That is what it currently is. Then factor in how long the guy wants to mess around selling all the parts and having the left overs lying around and then selling them for scrap. Now factor in how much the tractor means to him and you.Now add in the possible cost of rebuilding EVERYTHING you can't test run. Then you can come up with a price. If you have your heart set on THIS tractor be generous. If you think with your head you will see that you are looking at a pile of parts that stands a GOOD chance of needing a total rebuild from end to end. Just went through this the other day on a Farmall A. I know where you are at. There are more fish in the sea(and tractors in back of the barn)!
