I was looking to buy a Ford 4000 and took it for a test drive. Everyting worked well, but when I left it running and put it in neutral, I saw an oil leak. I don't know if it is oil or transmission fluid. It leaks from a small hole that looks like it is supposed to be there. It is located on the bottom in the center , toward the front from the drain plug. It looks like it has a cotter pin coming out of the hole. Does anyone know what this is and how it works?

You didn't say what year the tractor was, but I'm assuming that it's post '65... If so, then a leaking rear main seal is quite common. Generally, they just weep. The front of the adapter plate is always damp. From my experience these leaks seldom wet the clutch as it takes them more time to reach that point than the clutch has life anyway. However if this one is dripping a lot and leaving puddles, it's probably time to change it. Tractor must be split, flywheel removed, etc. Don't be surprised if, after installing a new seal, it's damp again before long. I have yet to see a Ford tractor with these BSD engines that's worked, that doesn't weep at the rear seal. If they don't weep, they've never done more than idle. HTH.

Well, from your post, it sounds like that is the drain for the transmission bell housing. The cotter pin is supposed to be there to keep the hole open. The fluid could be either transmission fluid from the input shaft seal, the engine rear main seal, or both. If you look at the front of the flywheel where the timing marks are, and it's dry --then the rear main is not leaking into the bell housing.

Best guess is the input shaft seal. The clutch is probably oil soaked, but to fix the leak you need to split the tractor anyway. If the restof the tractor is nice, you should be able to use this information to drop the price quite a lot.
