I own a 1995 5610 8 speed. When I got on it the other day to hay the stock it didn't want to shift in gear. It was like the clutch wasn't engaging. At idle I was able to use a little force to creep it in reverse to get it out of the shed to take it to the shop. When I stopped it and let it sit awhile it worked fine. Two days later it does a hint of the same thing, like the clutch isn't engaging but then I was able to get it in gear and from then on it worked fine. The first time it had been sitting about 2 weeks but worked fine when last used. What's going on? It seems the clutch may not be engaging but why and how does it "heal" itself?

Had the same problem with a 4000. Clutch sticking to the flywheel sounds like a plausible answer. Mine did it for awhile, intermittently, always upon operation after sitting for awhile and always when it's cold. Hasn't done it for 6 mos or so.

My dad's 5600 does it all the time, clutch sticks to the flywheel. None of the 7 series he or I have ever does it but if the 5600 sits more than a couple of weeks, it sticks. Been living with it for 10-12 years now. Cant tell it hurts anything but is annoying.

Sounds like rust on splines or oil on clutch plate.

If it has a dampend clutch it could be a dampning spring broke and small pices of it are geting wedged in between the clutch disk and presurer plate of flywheel. If the tractor has lots of hours on it it could be the trans. input shaft splines are woren.

Are you saying that the clutch won't release? It's grinding when you try to put it in gear? Sounds like the clutch disc is rusting to the flywheel. It eventually breaks free with a little use, and then works fine. Otherwise it could be a bad pilot bearing, but that likely wouldn't heal itself. HTH.

Try blocking the clutch pedal down when the tractor is not in use. That should keep the components separated, and they shouldn't rust together.
