I'm working on a ford 601 powermaster for a friend of mine. The battery is installed with the + lead on the starter, and the - lead disconnected. It has a 6v battery that has been charged with a 12v charger. Reckon this is why he can't keep a battery in it?

If all he did was over charge the battery
I don't see any damage to the coil, resistor,
points, or starter. With the switch off the charger should not go anywhere else. If he
turned on the key the 12 volts would go through the
coil, but depending on the capacity of the charger
it may be no damage done.

6v is positive ground in all Ford tractors prior to '65 anyway. Your friend is wired backwards and overcharged! :-)

10-4. That's what I thought. Other than the battery, what else do you reckon is messed up?

battery may be OK - test it. Maybe low on water, but unless it got hot, it shouldn"t be damaged.
