Hello, Haven't been on this site in awhile. I'm about to do an 8 week resto of my 960 (the plan anyway). I'm going to start a picture album tonight. One quick question first though. I need to buy my paint. I saw listed on this site:
Ford Light Gray TP330 TISCO Ford Medium Gray TP240 TISCO Ford Red TP310 TISCO Which of these if any are correct for my 55 960? I'm most comfortable using PPG DCC paint, but if I know which is correct maybe they can cross reference. If not, I might have to make some swatches of the Tisco and get it mixed in PPG. Where can you buy Tisco? thank you,
Brad_bb

Brad, are you interested in painting your 960 back the original colors or just a red and gray you like? The Tisco red you have listed first appeared in 1958 and had more orange than the previous red, which was a carry over from the 8N days. The Tisco red you have listed is actually M1J-956-SE_. The correct red for your tractor was M-2822 and Ford called it Vermillion. Iowa Paint number 48245. The gray was M-13243 that Ford called medium gray. Iowa paint number 781. I've listed Iowa numbers as that is the Tisco paint supplier. I have a 1961 861 that we painted with PPG (color matched the red and gray) about three years ago, I've turned down a $13,500.00 serious offer.....Kelly.

The PPG red is DAR 70075. The New Holland red is the orange red for 1958 and later Fords. But, New Holland's gray is right on. And great paint if you add a hardener, such as the one available at Tractor Supply. Speaking of Tractor Supply, they have a new product from Valspar that is the authentic red for pre-1958 Fords. Quality stuff with a reasonable price.

Brad your not going to save much money using Tisco paint, and your NH dealer should have the original paint in stock.

Pernell;

If you don't mind me butting in, I'm also getting ready to paint my 850. I did some research in the archives and saw that many recommend using an epoxy primer and a matching brand paint over it. I was wondering what the difference in wear is between the Ford primer and paint and an epoxy primer and mmatching paint, say acrylic or urethane. Thanks

Hi,
Just responding to your question about epoxy. Epoxy primers are great. They really seal moisture out. The are rust inhibiting, but not rust proof. Therefore you should have a clean rust free substrate. For top coats, acrylic urethane is a great product. Almost all new cars are painted in acrylic urethane base coat. It"s also available in single stage, which I also use quite often in restoration. Flattener can also be added to make semi gloss, eggshell or flat finish. The paint is usually full gloss out of the can. I"ve done automotive restoration work for 16 years, so I am very familiar with these products. I perfer PPG DP epoxy sealer/primer and DCC single stage acrylic urethane top coat because the work very well and I have used them for a long time. Other manufacturers of epoxy sealer/primer will work fine too though -Dupont, Keystone etc.

I"m not looking to save money on that ...I"m going to be painting the tractor with PPG DCC (single stage acrylic urethane). I will only get some of the Tisco to do a color match if I have to. I prefer not to if possible.
