Hello,
I"ve just embarked on what I plan to be an 8 week resto of my 960 Ford tractor. I have to have it back together in 8 weeks to start mowing the grass with the woods mower I pull behind it. It is an ambitious resto, but I am farming out all the stripping to Redi-Strip in Roselle, IL. I"ve don"t frame off classic car restos for a long time so I"m confident I can do this in 8 weeks(12 worst case). My picture page for the resto is linked here. I will be changing pictures around each week and adding new ones and captions etc, so check back. My first task is figuring out which parts were silver plated and which were painted. When all the parts and hardware come back from the stripper I will send out parts for plating to www.detailplating.com. It"s not cheap, but I have some tricks to reduce cost. Originally parts on this tractor were silver cadmium plated. There are few people that do that type of plating anymore due to it"s hazardous nature, plus it is not as durable as silver zinc with clear chromate. Silver zinc has a brighter appearance too. I will be using zinc plating (without any blue tint like you sometimes see with hardware store hardware). Anyone with this kind of restoration detail research would be helpful. Otherwise I"ll have to do the best I can by studying my parts. Were the carriage bolts on the rear fenders bolted on after painting or before? In other words did they get painted over or not? Were the large phillips head screws in the instrument panel area and in the area of the lower grill left plated or painted over? The throttle lever appears to have been plated silver at one time, was it painted over too or did it have a silver plated finish? Was the red and gray paint full gloss or semi-gloss? More questions to come. Brad_bb

Thanks for the reply guys. The hydraulic hose was on the tractor when I got it. I don"t use it. At least for the short term I have removed it and plugged the port. If I can determine that it is correct and original, Then I"ll get a new hose and reinstall later. The fan shroud came on the tractor and is original. It is necessary for the fan to work correctly and pull air through the radiator. Otherwise it will draw more from the sides and therefore not provide enough cooling. The carriage bolts I was refering to were ones that mount accessory brackets onto the fenders -light bracket, other brackets which I don"t know the use for. Some of the carriage looking bolts on the fenders are rivets, but some are actual carriage bolts for accessories. The mounting carriage bolts do look like they were silver plated originally. It makes sense that they did not get painted as they were installed during final assembly. The hardest part is trying to figure out what hardware on the frame/diff were installed after painting and therefore did not get painted. Some items I am able to tell from inspection. Was the engine installed when they painted the chassis assembly? Was the front end installed. I suspect that They were not, therefore the bolts that install the front end and engine to the frame would be left plated and not painted. More to come..time to head out to the shop now and pull the engine and front end off.

John, I think you are right, I did not read it very close.

Brad,
I've got a 960 wide front that has what looks like the same paint job as yours. My sheet metal is pretty rusty though and someone slapped a set of Ford 4000 decals on the sides of the hood. I suspect that the blue paint job and decals were to deceive an unsuspecting buyer, possibly at an auction.

Does the hydraulic hose coming off the accessory plate operate a mower of some kind?

Good luck with the restoration, I'll be watching the pics and wishing that I could do the same for mine.

Here's more pictures of my ugly 960. I noticed that you have a fan shroud that mine is missing. Wonder if I'm going to need that come summertime?

I hope that the link works.

Brad, I think John is correct on the fender mounting bolts. I think you'll find the throttle lever, rod from lever to governor arm, spring, and rod from governor to carb was plated and not painted. You didn't say what year? If this is a 1957, I have some great hood side decals. POWERMASTER w/gear which goes great with the embossed Ford script and looks good on the 55/56, but only correct for the 1957....Kelly.

The instrument panel screws are plated and available from FNH for about $4 each.
What you refer to as carriage bolts in the fenders are really rivets, you can grind the ends off and knock them out with a punch. I replaced mine with 3/8 carriage bolts.
Good luck.

Brad, I wish you well on this project, sounds like you have your ducks lined up. But, are you really doing this detailed of a restoration on a machine that will just cut the grass? (cool)

Danny, I think Brad was asking about the bolts that hold the fender frames to the rear axle. They are carriage bolts. (Sorry, don't know if they were painted or not, my memory say's that they were not painted as the fenders are different color than the axle. But, better get an expert's answer.)

Yes I am really going to do this. 8 weeks is the plan, but worst case is stretching it to 12 weeks. To do this you have to send certain things out so that things can be done in parallel. I already sent out my generator and starter and recieved them back rebuilt. I only have to detail them now. I am behind in the dissassembly and getting the frame/diff out for blasting. After showing pics to the stripper, they recommended sand blasting for the frame/diff as opposed to soda. The rest of the parts are being electrolytic alkaline dipped. I was supposed to get the engine off last weekend, but by the time I understood the way to do it, it was too late. That will happen this weekend and I will prep the frame/chassis with duct tape and using wood and duct tape to seal off the clutch starter opening where the engine was. Then I"ll have it towed to the stripper on Monday. I then need to get the engine apart and assess the condition. It runs really well and no smoke, but since I have it apart, now"s the time to refresh it. Plus I want the block and head stripped clean so I can properly paint them and the engine needs new seals and gaskets.
