600 engine trouble

I have a Ford 600 that was running fine. I had it idling while walking in the yard. The engine stopped and could not be re-started. The starter cranked the engine but after a few trys I found that the engine was frozen. I even tried jacking the tractor and moving the rear wheel while in gear. Three questions: 1. What is a typical area of failure in this engine? and 2. Do I pull the pan or the head? (bearings or stuck pistons) 3. Could something be frozen in the hydraulic pump or in the "extra transmission" that this model has?

Thank you.

Thanks to all for the help. Don't think it is the starter but will check that first. Next is the hydraulic pump. After that, I will pull the pan. Gee, I love misery and frustration.

Working on tractors is fun. I did some of this with my dad 45 years ago. He passed away in 1993. My son has taken up the interest and I enjoy helping him. He know has a Ford 600, Allis WD45, three IH A's and a CUB. I won't count the JD lawn tractor. Many of the tools we use are the ones my dad used during the mid 1950's when I was only a few years old. No microprocessors or catalytic converters, easy to work on too.

Thanks again, Bill

If it was cranking over fine then stopped.. I'd suspect stuck starter drive gear as well..

Bill, its possible your starter is locked in the flywheel. Place your trans in high gear and rock back wheels again. If this dosen't work I would remove starter before I got serious about tearing down.

Ouch! That's bad news, Bill.

Were you close enough to hear it just before and when it stopped? Did it stop with a "Wham" or just stutter to a stop?

How was the oil pressure? Usual reading hot idling? What's the oil level? Coolant temp? It still has coolant, right?

Diesel or gas engine? Diesels can leak oil into the pan, diluting the oil. Bad things happen from there.

Easiest, fastest and most productive thing to pull at this point is the oil pan. Drop it and have a look see.

What fails? Hydraulic pump for the 3pt could lock up and cause the camshaft to break. Could have seazed a bearing, broken a rod or rod bolt. My guess is as good as your's, take a look and report back!

Good luck!
