I used this tractor to mow my Grandad's walnut grove until it quit running a couple years ago. Before it quit running, though, the oil pressure would drop to zero whenever it went downhill and it would start knocking. I thought maybe the oil pump was worn out so I pulled the pan, bought the oil pump rebuild kit and installed it, but it didn't really make a difference. The bearing under the cap that the oil pump was on looked like it was in pretty good shape...The engine smoked a bit at full throttle, so the rings were probably shot. Has any one ever seen this happen before? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks guys,
Aaron

A friend of mine had a 550 Oliver that lost oil pressure when going down hill, after we rebuilt the lower end do to bearing failure we installed a baffle in the oil pan and that took care of the problem. When going down hill the oil would go to the front of the pan away from the oil pump pick up screen.

I tend to agree with SouNDguy. I have a 2n that I rebuit about 5 years ago, and it does not lose pressure up hill down hill, or level. I suspicion that there is a crack in that pickup tube just below the oil level when the tractor is on flat level ground. When you go up or down hill, it exposes the crack and sucks air.

My 9N dropps the oil pressure going down hill, as does many other
N's. I would not race the engine downhill
but other than that its no problem.

Usually an intermittant loss of OP is due to a cracked pickup tube sucking air..
