I just got off the phone with a guy who has a 1965 or 66 Ford 5000 Diesel with S-O-S for sale. The price is very reasonable so I'm going to look at it tomorrow. He says the S-O-S doesn't want to go into Reverse until it gets warmed up. Could thid be something simple or is going to require a diassembly of the transmission?
I'm looking forward to joining the ranks of happy S-O-S owners.

They say it comes in threes. I just answered a question on reverse for another feller. It's now on page 2 about midway down.

Here's what I said:

Lee, there is no component in your transmission that should ONLY affect reverse. There are three possibilities I can think of if other ratios are problematic.

1. Can you engage Park with the engine running? If not you have a shifter or shifter cable adjustment issue.

2. Do 9th and 10th work properly?
If not you have a Clutch 1 engagement issue.

3. Do 1,2,3 and 4 work properly?
If not you have a Band 3 engagement issue.

Number 1 and 3 are mechanical issues. Number 2 is a hydraulic issue.

Let us know more and we'll try to further this.

Cold S-O-S transmissions are finicky with respect to reverse. Neither of mine like reverse until "warmed up." By warmed up, I mean a very few minutes. Unless it has issues after running for a few minutes it is probably just the nature of the beast.

As Rick advised, change the oil and filter and adjust the bands.

First guess would be sticky control valve. If reverse works ok after warm up everything important should be good. Change the oil and adjust it, good to go.
