460 Carb.? problems

I recently purchased a 1955 460 which ran OK. I have completely rebuilt the electrical system and converted to a 12v system including a new coil. Tractor ran pretty good but had fuel leaks and I could not shut-off the fuel shut-off.
I rebuilt the Carb. The tractor ran ok for about an hour with the initial Carb. Settings. When normal operating Temp. was reached I tried to Adj. The Carb. But the Adj. Didn’t seem to do much. Got popping through Carb. And backfire on shutdown. . Replaced the shut-off valve and sediment bowel to fix fuel leak.
Now tractor only runs at very rough idle. The choke and throttle have little effect.
The Ford manual shows a spring in the float shut off Assy. I don’t have one, is this a problem. I used a 601 sediment bowel and shut-off valve, is this a problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I just got my 1965 4500 Industrial going again. It took a new battery, tuneup and rebuilding the carburator. We weren't getting any fuel into the bowl. It turns out the spring on the float has to be inserted to where it forces the float down into the bowl. It's a light weight spring but does hold the needle in the closed position if not placed in there correctly. I had the dealer print up a copy of their blow-up diagram of the carburator.... that helped. I also purchased a manual for it. Hope this helps.

I have a '56 640. I went through pretty much the same scenario you described, except mine had already been converted to 12v before I got it. Anyway, I spent considerable time, effort, and money tracking down what I thought was a fuel system problem. This was after I had replaced the ignition system. Turned out it was the external resistor between the battery and coil. It was stepping down the power too much and not giving a hot enough spark to run over a sputtering, missing idle. If you have an external resistor, replace it and see if that helps.

The popping and backfire sound like a timing issue to me. Recheck your timing as something may have slipped. Could be causing the rough idle too.
