6v to 12v Problem

I have a Ford 601 Workmaster that I have just completed converting to 12v. My problem is that it will not start using the starter switch. I can jump it on the starter Solenoid from ( I ) to ( S ) pole with no problem. I am not using the Ampmeter as outlined and wondering if there is a different wiring instruction? When should there be current from the solenoid (s) pole to starter switch or how should the solenoid test for power when the ignition switch is turned on ? Any help would be Appreciated.

Thanks for all your help. The Solenoid was the problem and I Just replaced it with the correct part. I figured that my local Napa had it covered when I told them what part I needed. They had the correct part and it works great. Thanks again for all your great info.

Anthony

These solenoids come in many electrical configuations. If you have points in your distributor you need the I post energized only when the circuit is made. This can then bypass your resistor by being connected to the downside of the resistor thus feeding 12V directly to the coil when the starter is cranking. The S terminal need to be energized continously as it is a component of the battery side of the solenoid. Your starting switch when depressed will complete the circuit thus closing the solenoid feeding voltage to the starter and the I circuit. If you have electronic 12V ignition you don't need the I post as you feed 12V directly to coil which should have an internal resistor.

Sounds to me like you have put a solenoid on this tractor from a car parts store.
If so you have the wrong solenoid.

Go to the link below and look for 2) Starter Relay

Look all the way at the bottom just above the Disclaimer and you will see a link for wiring diagrams.

If you need more help let me know.

If its the origanal soliniod the way it works is by grounding the small post on the solinoid. Sounds like you have some thing missed wired.
