Any easy way to get a 4000 diesel engine unstuck?

I purchased a ford 4000 a while back. The engine supposely was not stuck but i cannot get it to turn over with the starter. I tried to pull the tractor this weekend. In fourth gear the rear tires would not rotate so I'm guessing the engine is stuck. I've never had a diesel stuck so is the only way to put something in the cylnders is by removing the head? I'm gonna check out the starter first but I'm pretty sure the engine is stuck. Any advice here other than selling the tractor? LOL

I would suggest removing the injectors before you attempt to turn the engine over. If a cylinder is full of liquid, it will not compress.

Did you use 4th gear, as in low range, or 8th gear (4 high)? If you were only in 4th gear, (low) then hell will freeze over before it would turn over by towing it.
Beyond that, I would remove the starter and try turning the engine over with a bar before I go filling it with anything or tearing it down. Start with the simple stuff, and rule that out before you get in too deep. HTH.

Rod, thanks for the info but this tractor does not have a high and low range. I put it in the highest gear available (4th) but it may still be not high enough to turn the engine. I thought that may be the case and I'm goning to check the starter before doing any thing else to it.

OK, you've got an early 4000, 4 cylinder? I assumed you had the later 3 cylinder. By all means play with the starter and see if you can get it turning with that or a bar. Beyond that, I haven't the patience to go at them with soaking agents. If it's stuck, it's stuck. My personal choice (and I'm not critisizing taking your time with it), is to pull the head, pan, and unhook the rods, and then drift the pistons with a block of wood. Just be careful of the crank. If you want to save as many parts as possible, this isn't the solution for you... but if you're going to go in an put a kit in it... drift them. FWIW,

Rod

Not sure on that engine but you should be able to remove the injectors and then fill the cylinders with what ever you want. If it where mine I would fill them with turpentine, not paint thinner but turpentine. I would also check the oil my guess is you will find it smells like diesel fluid and maybe over full. If a seal goes bad in the injector pump it leaks diesel in to the oil then the engine locks up. I had an Allis 190XT that had that problem. I filled the cylinders with turpentine and it popped loose then the bad part was the pump needed to be rebuilt which cost over $750 to have done

Old, I checked the oil and it looks ok and is not over full. I'll try the injectors after I check the starter.
BTW what did you do with the MH 30 you purchased?

I still have it, it runs but the engine knocks real bad. Sounds like the oil pan is full of nuts and bolts that are jumping around in there. Its sort of on the back burner right now. I have another 30 with a locked up engine and its soaking in a mix or tranny fluid and turpentine to see if it will pop loose. If it does I may take the 2 tractors and build one good one from it.

I purchased a MH 30 with a stuck engine about 3 years ago and been soaking it ever since. The engine won't budge so I gave up on it.I'm about ready to give it away just to have it's parking space. I decided after that not to buy any tractors with stuck engine but I guess I did with this 4000.

I have an Allis C in my shop right now that was stuck, but isn't now. But it has been a pain in the well you know. I had to pull the head off and then when it broke free #2 sleeve and piston popped out of the block. I have since put a sleeve from a donor engine in to it and by late today it should be up and running unless some thing strange happens. Just takeing a brake from working on it right now.

Pull the starter first, try rolling the engine over with a suitable bar in the flywheel teeth. It's easier to pull the pan to see if any rods or mains are discolored from turned bearings. If that looks OK , you will probably need to pull the head and tap on the pistons to break them free..I use a piece of hardwood and a good sized hammer to get their attention..A good penetrating oil like Kroil or PB Blaster will help..Good Luck

thanks Roy. I will check the starter first as that will be the easiest to rull out.

It's not a SOS trans. is it? in reply to Jrry, 03-29-2006 10:07:57
I know he said he had it in 4th gear, but if it's a Selecto-Speed. It defaults to park, wheels will be locked, with engine off. This information comes from experience on a newly aquired '62 4000 SOS. And, that's all I know about that, said, like Forest Gump would say. bjr
