I have a ford 3000 tractor... about a 1975 model I think. Without a load on the pto, it seems to engage and disengage fine. Once I attached a cutter to it though it will not engage with out significant grinding. I am assuming that it has some kind of slip clutch. Is this a common problem with older tractors and is it expensive to repair.

Is your model the 8spd/live pto ( 2 - stage clutch)

Are you pressing the clutch down before engaging the pto? Is the clutch adjsuted correctly?

Definantly pressing the clutch down....as to whether or not it is adjusted properly, I can't say. How do you know? I have noticed that the tractor moves just slightly when you shift from neutral into a gear but of course that is on th transmission side.

I'd say the clutch is not fully disengaging.. may be an oily clutch issue.. adjustment, or wear on components. Thats why you are having pto grinding...countershaft is spinning and pto shaft is stopped... this creates problems and grinding at the coupler..
