Hi, We had trouble starting a 5000 diesel this winter and a mechanic told us to put a rag soaked in gas over the breather and try it.
Well it popped and ran, but now it's missing and blows alot of black smoke.

Forgot to add.. -D)- be carefull around high pressure diesel.. keep your hands away from the injector lines.. just put the wrench in there.. diesel ( and hyd fluid ) injected under the skin will earn you a trip to the ER and possibly gangreen..

If you think it is missing you can always take a wrench to the injector line and crack them till fuel bubbles. If you crack a line and there is no engine sound change, then that injector isn't 'injecting'. If you crack one and the smoke goes away, with an accompaning loss of rpm.. I'd say that is your bad injector..

You may have a bad injector or 2 and or a problem with the injector pump. Black smoke means its getting to much fuel most of the time or it has been tunred up a lot. Not if its also spiiting black junk out it means it just plan needs to be worked good and hard for a couple hours. Diesels don't like being babied and want to be worked hard.
