I have a 1985 4610 2wd with Ford loader. I'm having big problems with spindles breaking. I try not to overload the bucket but it seems my "babying " is not helping. On my third spindle in about a year. Does anyone have a solution other than buying a 4wd???? Any way to oversize spindles??? Thanks, Larry

Check your radius rods to see if they are bowed up, if they are it will increase the stress on your spindles.

I have a '80 4600 that's my loader tractor. Use it mostly for round bales, and most of them are high-moisture, up to 2000 pounds. I haven't had any trouble with the spindles. I was wondering if you have the SU version, with the swept-back front axle like the 3610? They aren't as strong as the straight axle.

Fordfarmer, I'm not sure of the style of front end, but the horizontal pieces line up front to back with width adj. holes along them. I bought this tracter used and has 4610 decals. Not sure if it's an SU or not. Spindles are popping at the point where the outside bearing rides. This also is the place where the spindle slopes down to its smallest size.

Thanks Rod, I'll check into doing an axle swap tomorrow. I was hoping something could be done without getting too expensive. If all indications point to a 4wd, It'll mean a new tractor. I wouldn't attempt that on this ol girl.

The only comment I could make regarding the present setup is to make sure everything is snug. Bearings and cups are good? Check the spindle bushings for slop, as well as the thrust bearing on the spindle. Make sure everything moves freely. Beyond that, there isn't much to be done... Those spindles aren't exactly heavy for loader work.
You could look into installing an industrial front axle. There was a post a few days ago about doing that swap on a 4100. I think you would need to change the front bolster, along with the oil pan to pull the swap off. I can't tell you exactly what you need, but I'm sure it could be done.
Changing to FWD would be a different ballgame altogether. You would need to find a way to mount the transfer case to a housing that likely has no mounting holes or arpeture for it. Not saying it can't be done, but it would require a lot of work.
HTH.
