13 Industrial clutch

I have a 1970 4000SU, Originally I had trouble with the clutch linkage adjustment. I had to completely remove all free travel and push all the way down on the pedal in order to keep from grinding when going into gear, however the clutch would only seem to engage at the very top of the stroke when letting out. I figured this could only be caused by the pressure plate adjustment so I seperated the engine/trans to inspect. I looked over the parts diagram for my year/model to become familiar with the clutch components and was surprised to find that instead of the 11" single clutch ,I have what appears to be an industrial model 13" clutch installed. The clutch assembly looks fairly new with hardly any wear at all. The finger adjustment screws look to be staked in place from the factory so I don"t want to tamper with them. There is also an industrial type throw out bearing with greaser installed(I`ll need to add a line to outside of the bell housing to use this)
My questions are: Does anyone know if a 13" Industrial Clutch assembly ever came factory on 65-75 4000 series tractor? Could that be why I am having trouble adjusting the clutch pedal travel? Do I need a different linkage system to make this clutch work in my tractor?
TIA, Barry

I really don't know whether a 13" clutch disc was available on the thousand series or not. I'm pretty sure it was on the "10" series, and was standard on the "30" series. Lord only know what somebody like "me" has done to your tractor. A couple things come to mind though, on why this isn't working right for you. The first would be a bad pilot bearing. That would cause grinding, if the bearing was binding up.
Second, the larger disc is heavier, and would have more inertia, and would take longer to stop turning when you go about shifting. Those, however, would not effect the clutch engagement or free play.
The other consideration, regarding the free travel, and correct clutch engagement is with the length of the clutch bell crank (fulcrum) on the outside of the clutch housing, and as a consequence of that, the internal lever. Suppose you have a 30 series clutch, which I think you may. If the 30 series had longer levers internally and externally, which were made to give more lateral travel to the release bearing, and your tractor has shorter levers and linkages, it would not have the same travel. If you have 1" of lateral travel on a clutch that might require 1.25" to release properly, then there will be a problem like you describe. All I can tell you is that somebody will have to sit down with a few parts books, and see what was available on the thousand series.... Also, get the part numbers of the pressure plate/clutch that you have. If you get those numbers, input them into NH's part system, and they can tell you what model tractor that part fits. Then just go through the linkages and see what's different, etc. This will require research.....
The only other possibility I can think of would be broken or damaged fingers or a diaphram on the pressure plate.... But you would notice that sort of thing. Dunno. More research, I guess.

Thanks for the reply Rod. The throw out bearing, clutch plate, and pressure plate assembly all appear in "like new" condition. I feel like you that there must be some differance in the geometry of the linkage.
Fortunately I do have access to part numbers for the different models, it will just take some time to figure it all out.

If anyone out there has an industrial model 4000 with the 13" clutch I would appreciate it if you could post a picture of the linkage system/clutch release lever to use as a referance.
Thanks,
Barry
