ANYONE HAD ANY EXPERIENCE ON CHANGING HEAD LIGHTS FROM 6V TO 12V? THE OLD 6 VOLT BULBS HAD 1 WIRE, THE 12V BULBS HAVE 2. I ASSUME ONE IS JUST GROUNDED, THE OTHER TO THE SWITCH, BUT ... ALSO, HOW DO YOU GET THE OLD ONES OFF THE TRACTOR. A SOCKET WON"T FIT AND THERE"S NO ROOM FOR A WRENCH. SHOULD I TAKE OFF THE HOOD?

One other option, if you don't want to buy new bulbs for the tractor is to change the wiring a bit. The present setup likely has each light wired in parallel off the switch. You could, if you prefered, wire the 2 6V lights in series on a 12V system. Wire would run from switch, into light 1, out light 1 and into light 2 (instead of to ground), and from light 2 to ground. That would be a cheapo way of doing it. For my money, I'd just buy the 2 new 12v lights... FWIW,

Rod

The same headlight housing will accept either a 6 volt or 12 volt sealed beam lamp. Both 6 volt and 12 volt lamps have two terminals. Attach the ground wire to one terminal and the hot wire to the other.

GE part number for 12V lamp is 4419 and the number for 6V lamp is 4019 or 4013....either number works. The 4019 is higher wattage than the 4013.

You can change lamps without removing light housings from the tractor. Loosen the screw holding the steel band on the front and gently pull the band off. The lamp will practically fall out in your hands, held in only by the wires once you remove the retaining band.

Everything I've described above applies to the Tract-O-Lite style headlights. If you have something different, then some of the above may not apply. I've bought and sold several pairs of Tract-O-Lites so I think I know what I'm talking about.

Incidentally, the TOL is designed with a ground wire inside the light casing. This probably worked great when everything was new, but after 50 years of rust and repaints, it just doesn't work well anymore. The lights will work better if you run the ground wire back out the hollow mounting bolt and attach it to a good ground somewhere on the tractor. Some say to run the lights' gound wires all the way back to where the battery ground is attached. On my 850, I attached the ground wires to the screw that hold the front emblem on. No problems in 5 years.

Jim is 100% right on. I ground my lamps right at the alternator bracket. i just picked up a wagner 4419 from TSC the other day for my 12v NAA.
