Connecting rod oil squrit hole

Here I am again embarrassing my self in public. But, I don't want to ruin my new engine so.... my question is this; when installing the connecting rod and piston assembly into the block which way does the oil squirt hole face? And, for orientation is that with the engine upside down or right side up.

My manual say that the notch on the piston faces the front of the engine and the oil squirt hole is to be on the right. My pistons have no notch only "STD" stamped on top of the piston. They don't give the orientation.

Thanks in adavance for your help. Just consider me the guy the provides some comedy releif.

On any engine, conrod oil squirt holes are there to lubricate the THRUST side of the piston. That means, with a normal engine (clockwise rotation from front) the squirt hole should be on the LEFT side of the engine.

Lest I mislead anyone, in my post I was referring to looking at the engine from the front. Of course, that would be the RHS of engine when driving it.

While the pistons are full floaters, the mark on the top of the piston should always face foreward, even though they could be installed the other way as long as the rod oil hole is facing the cam: reason is that the piston pin hole on these types of pistons is not drilled thru the exact center line of the piston. The piston pin hole is offset, requiring that the piston must be installed only with the mark facing foreward.

Dave is right and For the future if you should have to take this one or another apart for a problem you should scribe the top of the piston for front and cyd. number. They definitly need to go Back together the way they were. That is actually a good question about the pin holes on the rods, cause if I am not mistaken that is the only way other than the push rods that the cam gets any oil on it with this engine.

The oil squirt hole should point towards the camshaft. If these are new pistons they should have a mark of some type indicating the front or forward position. The one thing to remember is this piston and rod combo is called a full floater, which means the rod and piston are assembled by hand and held together with snap rings not pressed on so you can actually put the piston in either orientation on the rod the front indicator is actually so you know the oil hole is pointing in the correct direction.

I just went thru this with 172D and you guys are right, as the hole, according to the IT manual, goes toward the camshaft. The pistons on my engine had arrows and a dot that went towards the front of the engine. bjr
