My SOS seems to work OK in the shop,in other words I can get all the gears by adjustment. When I take it outside,I will be missing 9th gear. Is it possible that one of the valves or servos could be sticking? This tractor sat in a barn for 10 years. I have considered changing the oil and putting in some NAPA transmission tune. Does anyone have any idea if this would really screw this up?

Thanks for the comments,I have had a real hesitation of adding any additive. I have been using a trouble shooting manual, but nothing adds up to what it is telling me.I am trying to trip over something obvious, because the tractor is not worth a tranny overhaul. For what I am going to use it for,it does'nt make much difference, but after all the restoration effort you sort of have a quest to see it work right. I think maybe an oil change is in order.

Take Old's advice and change the oil. Be sure to use the correct oil and be sure to change the filter beneath the top cover at the same time. Do yourself a favor and get a Ford manual that covers the S-O-S transmission BEFORE you attempt to remove the top cover to change the filter.

Well if it sat that long and you haven't change the fluid in there I can almost bet thats 50% of your problem. Any time some thing sits that long it will have water in the system. Drain what it has in it and put the correct type fluid in, don't use any sort of tranny treatment since its not really made for that type of tranny. Or in other words your first step is to change the fluid and then go from there. By the way the water it will have in it came from condensation.

If you are talking about some additive or fluid other than the specified lubricant, you may be asking for trouble, I have seen one S-0-S ruined by using the wrong fluid. Might be best to figure out the problem. I think you have some good resources for help on these here, that and with the correct manuals, is probably a little safer than the trial and error with some additive, in my humble opinion. Be interesting to see what others think on this one, I'm no expert on these, used to own one years ago.
