Have a nose assembly from a 1967 4000 3 cyl diesel. The assembly is cracked. Is it cast iron or cast steel? I would really like to repair this rather than buy a new piece. THANKS

Shawn,m

The issue of welding cast iron has been discussed at length on the N-Board. It CAN and IS done BUT you need to have a welder that knows how to do it. If you find one that says (claims) he can do it, ask to see some of his work. Preferably someone that has been using the equipment that he welded. That way you can see if it has held and how the weld looks, don't want cruddy looking work it generally means cruddy inside the weld where it counts!

Here is a post that is a copy of an old thread on the topic. Note especially the comments by Dave, who does cast iron welding on his job. Link

And>Link here is another thread with some good information. Link

NOTE: one issue is the practicality of the various methods. I would guess that "cold" welding will be the one most practicle for you.

Regards,
Larry

I guess that ford used cast iron exclusively in their tractors. I've been a welder here for over 20 years but, cast was never my specialty. I was hoping that this piece was cast steel. It had a terrible job done on it by the previous owner. My guess it wasn't cleaned properly (oil and grease) I have this piece off the tractor and nearly degreased. I will begin grinding out the old repair(looks like stainless!)
Is there any place to find out if it is cast iron or cast steel? I appreciate what help you have given my. The other sites were most helpful.

I'm sure it's cast iron. What i've found is that if you can weld it with 7018 it's cast steel. Caterpillar equipment uses cast steel and it welds nice with 7018. If this thing is for looks and isn't under any stress i'd braze it and paint it. The best thing i've found is a product sold from a company that's name is Rockmount. They sell all types of special welding rods. I have bought a product from them that looked like a brazing rod only it was square and rough like cast iron. It had no brass in it all. You used it like a brazing rod. It was unbelievable, I used it on manifolds and other things. If it can weld a manifold it can do just about anything. And when you're done the weld looks like cast.

Shwan; I am not a expert on "cast" metal, but have welded a lot of it, some easy, and some next to impossiable. I don't think there is a difference, cast metal can be made up of different % of components, but cast is cast. Van
