Just getting started on a nice fixup on a 961 my power steering pump is missing the steering cyl is there but was left open to the weather bugs ect, On the pump has anyone tried useing one from a car? I called around for used parts all were BIG BUCKS. Also thinking of makeing a plain steering rod and just forget PS tractor steers nice and easy without PS.

One fella told me he used a 1957 Ford car pump and it worked fine. I have bought three or four car pumps offEbay for less than $100 including a rebuilt perfect one for $22. Mostly the brackets, pulleys, and tanks are totally differant so you will have to transfer from a tractor pump or improvise.

behr, the power steering pump missing was from Eaton. The car pump from the 50s was somewhat the same pump, but pulleys were different, mounting brkts were different and hyd fittings were different. Your PS cylinder can be rebuilt, if you cut the weld, you can replace the crome plated shaft and with a new seal kit will work O.K. I've done several of the 600/800 cylinders.

Berh:

I believe that the early Ford tractor power steering pumps are the same as that used on Ford cars in the 50s. Of course those too are going to be hard to find and probably expensive.

The bigger problem for your 961 will be the cylinder. It is not rebuildable and no longer serviced. Nearly all of them leak because of rust on the shaft. If your shaft is not rusted you may be able to get by with a new shaft seal, which is still available from CNH.
