1964 4000 Industrial 12v conversion

I have a 1964 4000 industrial with the 4 cyl. gas engine. When I bought it it had already been converted to the 1 wire 12v alternator(badly), however the start switch was corroded internally and you had to bypass with a screwdriver to get the starter to engage. 2 years ago the solenoid, key switch, start switch and some wiring shorted severly and melted. I couldn't find the correct parts in the time needed to get it running so installed a automotive car switch and 4 pole solenoid. I would like to put back the 3 pole solenoid and use the original start switch with the neutral cutout again for safety reasons with my kids always wanting to climb on it. I am also putting in a new 12v coil with no external resister. I have printed out the schematics for the 12v conversions from this site and have read a couple of the narratives. Is there a difference in the NAPA 3 pole soleoids? One person said to use a SI-56. Is this an insulated type solenoid that has power from the battery (+) post internally to the S terminal then goes to ground thru the start switch to energise the solenoid when the start switch is engaged? Also on the schematics for the 1 wire conversion, just above the key switch there were several wires going to what looks like a junction. What is that. It is not labeled. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be appreciated.

John,
Thanks for the information and drawings, they will help alot. I'm using the 1 wire as that is what is already there, and I don't have a dash light. There is a hole for it but the light and all the wiring is missing. I thought that the 3 pole solenoid was also stock. I will see if the local NAPA has a 4 pole insulated solenoid as you describe, or I'll look into Walt's. I have already purchased the NAPA coil you stated.

1] Why are you wiring the alt 1 wire??? A 1964 will have the dash warning light so you can easily wire this alternator with 3 wires the way it is suppose to work.

2] A 1964 does not use a 3 pole starter relay. It uses a 4 pole. The 4 pole is much better because the tractor will not start with out the key on. (the 3 pole will) You can get a 4 pole relay that is set up to work with 12 volts by getting the relay for a diesel.
UF40680 Starter Solenoid (relay type); 601, 801, 901, 2000, 4000 4 cyl. diesel (1958-64)
12 volt. Replaces number 311007FR
Price: $12.00 Walts tractor parts

3] A true 12 volt coil can be gotten at NAPA. Ask for part # IC14-SB

4] The junction box above the key is called a terminal box. A place to hook wires together where they will not ground out to the tractor metal parts. A lot neater than two wires twisted together and covered with tape.
