Went and looked at a little tractor today. The guy says it is a 861. It has live pto and the 5 speed trans that sets up in the lefthand corner. My question is the tractor is blue and grey. All the pics on this board show them red and grey. Also is there anything to watch for on these guys? Mainly going to use it to rake hay and do chores. Thanks for any help

Ford Tractor switched to Blue and Gray in spring of 1962 as part of a Corporate wide "Blue stands for Quality " campaign. It could be an original blue and gray 861 but only the S/N will till if it is or is a repaint. I know well how much Ford Tractor studied the repaint issue with dealers, I did some of the surveys that proved painting in the latest colors really helped sales and dealer profit.

Assuming it is diesel. Make sure that it will idle. Throtle should have a kill position, a idle position and a set the high speed position. The one we bought has injector problems but that will probable never happen to yours. If it is any where near priced right--buy it You'll like it.

When Ford changed to the blue paint in about 1962 many of the older red tractors got painted blue to make them appear to be a later model. I have a 1958 861 Diesel that was painted blue and has "Ford 4000" decals on the hood. I doubt that a farmer was concerned about the looks of his tractor so my guess is that tractor dealerships painted them as they were traded in on new tractors.
Make sure that the dual stage clutch works correctly and that the trans doesn"t jump out of gear (usually 3rd gear). Both repairs can get expensive in a hurry.
