I hesitate to mention this but I can"t figure it out. My tach cable broke a while back (3 months) and I ordered a new one (aftermarket) and installed it and everything seemed fine. I did notice that the cable seemed too long but no big deal. Now all of the sudden my tach seemed to jump and then quit. I figured that the flexible line was again broken. I pulled the instrument panel and was able to pull out the flex line and it is not broken. So I hook it back up and it works for a few minutes and then quits. I notice that if I pull on the line it seems to work for a while so I tie-wrapped it with a little tension and it worked just long enough to take the tractor back to the shed.I looked at it again today (pulled both ends off) and same situation. If I move it just a bit it seems to work ok for a minute or so and then back to not working.
I did notice that the flex line seemed a little small for the gen and also panel.
I am wondering if maybe the line diameter is a tad too small and by pulling on it might put enough tension on the panel to make it work.
Have you ever heard of this??? Any suggestions??

In my humble opinion two things are possible. Both them happened to me. The little fibre gear in the housing attached to the generator had a broken tooth. That was making my needle jump around. I got a NH replacement cheap.

Next the chinese aftermarket tach cable I saved money on was a POS. Just like yours is. I bought a NH cable, much thicker housing, better quality all around, and the thing worked like a champ. I threw the chinese one away. If the NH one is also chinese it ain't made in the same factory.

Be sure when you route the cable that it is clear of obvious heat sources like manifolds, etc. Those will mess it up fast. I tie-wrapped mine where it needed to be. Not a problem after that.
