Is it possible to convert a 851 D to gas? Can I use the same block? I tried to search the forum but I could not find any info.

172 gas & Diesels do NOT use the same block.
the gas head will not bolt on the diesel engine different bolt pattern. compare the gas head gasket with the diesel gasket see what I mean

I think you could convert a diesel engine to use gasoline, but I think you would have to use custom pistons to get the compression ratio down to 9 to 1 or less. Otherwise you would undoubtedly have serious detonation. And you would also have to cobble up an intake and governor, as the diesel uses a completely different setup.

I think most of the lower end from the diesel would work in a gas engine. The diesel uses a forged crank that uses different bearings than the gas engine cast crank.

All in all, I think you would be ahead just getting a complete gas engine and rebuilding that rather than trying to convert the diesel. Or rebuild the diesel--they are much more fuel efficient, although also much more expensive to rebuild than a gas engine, especially if you have to rebuild the injector pump. If you decide to use a gas engine, make sure to get all the throttle linkage--it is different on the diesel.

I am looking for a rebuildable 172 diesel near Eastern Washington to replace the 144 in my 641D. Where are you? I am not familiar with Manteca... Good luck with your project.

I think I'll stick with diesel - didn't know I had to swap out the bottom-end. I thought the head, intake and exhaust manifolds and few other small things here-and-there. Thanks.

Your tractor, but why would you want to convert it to gas? Desiel power is much more fuel efficient although its costing more per gallon.

The block should be the same 173 ci, but you'll obviously need the gas engines manifolds, head, and internals - pistons etc. It would be cheaper and simplier to find a gas engine that is complete and bolt it up.
