Hi all. I've got a problem with my boss's 1953 Ford Jubilee tractor. The other day, I went to start it and it wouldn't turn over. The starter was bad. So we decided to pop the clutch so we could use the tiller that was mounted on it. We removed the tiller then pushed it out of the shop into the gravel parking lot. We use a nylon strap and tied it to an old s10 pickup, has a 2.8l v6. We slowly pulled the tractor across the lot and discovered that the clutch didn't seem to disengage. With the tractor in gear and nothing pushing down on the pedal, the tractor moves freely as if in neutral. After replacing the starter, with the motor running and in gear. the left rear tire "jumps" and shakes when we let out on the clutch. Does anybody have any idea of what is wrong? My dad restores older tractors and this puzzled him. It seems to me that something broke in the rear end. Any ideas are appreciated.

By the way, a Jubilee is not a good tractor for a tiller. First gear is way too fast.

I'm puzzled by "the clutch didn't seem to disengage." By your description it sounds as though the clutch did not engage.

While I agree with the others about the possibility of rear end/rear axle problems, the culprit could also be the clutch itself. If it has sheared rivets it may give these symptoms as well.

Hey Ace, The first place I would look is at the hubs. The 8-N's and the Jubilees had a splined hub attached to the axle with a big nut. They would wear and the splines would strip out. Just pulling it may have been enough to break it if it was worn bad. Had one break in 1974 on dads old Jubilee and I fixed it in the field, and I was only fourteen so they aren't to bad to fix. Your local New Holland dealer should have one on stock.

Well as the others have said you could have ring and pinion problems or and this is what I think your problem will be is you broke the axle. The axle on the Jubilee was one of there weak links. I sold a Jubille a few years ago with a broken axle and that was the second time in less then 10 years that it broke one

It definately sounds like your differential is in trouble. I would drain your tranny and differential oil, pull the PTO assembly, and take a look-see inside with a flashlight. If you find large rivets sitting on the bottom of the housing, you will have to pull the left axle trumpet to fet to your differential for repair.

Good luck,
Dan

Sounds like you broke the rivetts that hold the ring gear onto the differential.
No one knows why they break. Sometimes they go forever. Sometimes they just let go.
Bolt kit is available from your dealer. Not a real hard job to fix. Mostly gruntwork.
Remove the LEFT side axle housing. Diiferential just pulls out.
Good luck
Jerry
