Operating instructions are found in the owners manual. However, be careful when buying an owners manual as there were 5 different editions published and not all of them contain information about the SOS tranny. Here are the 5 editions I know of:

Form SE6085-C: 1957, covers 4 and 5 speed trans but not the SOS

Form SE6085-D: 1957, same as above with regard to transmissions

Form SE6085-E: 1958, covers 4 speed and SOS, but not 5 speed.

Form SE6085-F: 1959, same as -E with regard to transmissions.

Form SE6085-G: covers all three transmissions.

Here's where you need to be careful: If you buy a reprint owners manual, you get the SE6085-C and you won't have any operating instructions for your SOS. You need to look for an original vintage owners manual and you need to make sure the form number is SE6085-E, F, or G. The form number is found on the title page.

The SOS manual supplement you refer to pertians to the later SOS with DDC. The original ORC SOS is in the the hundred series shop manual.

I've got a 671D and haven't had it out of the shed much yet, had to rebuild the engine a little, melted piston, wrecked head, replaced injectors, ... some other smaller things but, have been watching the forum and everyone I have talked to or seen talking about the SOS that you can shift on the go, up and down the gears without using the inching pedal(pedal on left side is not a clutch)you just shift to the gear you want and away you go, does have some set screws that you can move to different gear settings for the gears you want to use the most(screws are located under the shifter covers, where the lever comes out, you just back off the philips screw) mine seems to run just fine what little I've had to use it. I do suggest that you buy a factory manual for it, I think I bought mine from this web site. good luck and enjoy it.

Some guys say those are the best tranny's Ford ever made. They just love them.
The rest are afraid of them. Scarce parts, fewer mechanics who know how to fix them. Dunno.
Wouldn't mind having one myself someday. Would want it on a newer 3 cyl tractor though.
They're ticklish. Helps to know how best to run them.
Ford made a supplemental manual for the SOS owners.
I'd do a google advanced search for "select o speed manual" (selectomatic is a Case or some such brand) or try it on Ebay. Good luck
Jerry
