Update on Ford 4000 fuel problem.

I've been reading posts on the this site for a couple of years now and even ask a few question and answer once in great while too. One thing I notice here and with most news groups, not many people ever follow up once they have their problem solved and tell what the solution was. Sort like reading a book and somebody taking the last chapter.
So here is what was my problem from the get go.
I was having problems (see link) with my fuel supply and as usual thought the worst or most complicated thing had to be the culprit. I got a rebuilt car, electronic ignition and was starting to think the fuel pump might be bad. So to check the fuel pump I got a remote switch pulled the fuel line from the intake side on the sediment bowl and nothing was coming out. Next I pulled the line at the intake of the fuel pump. Still nothing.
Ok so it's the either the tank or shut off valve. I put a bucket under the tractor and pulled the valve. Think there was about 5 gals of gas in the take and about 2 1/2 made it to the bucked. The valve was the orgial nylon type and it seemed to turn pretty hard so I figured it worked ok..
Took the valve to the bench and tore it apart to find that the nylon turn handle had broken off in the 90% closed postion.. It was letting just a little gas through.. Enough to idle and not run out.
New valve and everything back together and it runs like a champ again.. Heck even better with the electron ignition.
What did I learn.. If you have a fuel problem start at the tank and work your way forward.

Sorry for the length, but now if someone else seem to have the same symptoms then the will have my experience to help out.

Again I want to thank every one tried to help.

V/R Greg ...

Agree wholeheartedly (both on looking for the simplest cause of a problem and posting followup). I just had a starter rebuilt and the real problem was the ground stud was not making good contact with the case and providing a solid ground. I did post a follwup to hopefully save someone else the grief (and $100+).

A year ago, I couldn't get rpms & power out of my 256-cyl diesel on my TLB. After messing with fuel (injectors, pump)for awhile (days), found the problem to be my NEW air filters had clogged, because previous owner put incorrect nut on the hold-down bolt, allowing exhaust to get around the seal. I remember thinking "Can't be the filters, they've only got 8 hrs on them and the engine runs fine up to 1200 rpm". I guess the best lessons are the ones we learn the hard way.

That is good information, Greg. Finding and disclosing such an unusual problem may save some of us the time and trouble of duplicating your efforts in the future. I have a 66 4000 gasser with the original plastic shut-off valve. Though I do use the valve and it appears to work, I will know where to start looking if I have problems similar to those that you had.

Thanks, in advance.

Dean

I'm so glad you found rhe promblem. You are correct, a lot of people do not return and tell the cure, might help someone else.
