I RECENTLY PURCHASED A FORD 841 (801) POWERMASTER AND WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THE FLUIDS AND FILTERS. I HAVE ORDERED A MANUAL FOR THIS TRACTOR, BUT IT HAS NOT COME IN YET. WHAT TYPE OIL AND GEAR OIL SHOULD I USE AND WHAT ARE THE CAPACITIES FOR EACH. ALSO, WHAT FILTERS SHOULD I USE?

For engine oil.. it will depend if you have a spin on adapter.. or the original cartridge style.

For oil.. Depending on your temp range, and oil pressure.. you might be able to use anything from sae 30w to 40w.. or a 15/40 or 20/50

Unit has 3 sumps inthe rear.. HYDS, TRANS and DIFFY... all 3 can use CNH M2C134D.. a thinnish UTF type oil ( generic UTF meeting the 134d oil will work ).. Or yuo can used gear oil in the trans and diffy, and aw 32/46 in the hyds.

If your seals leak between the 3 sumps.. use the UTF oil.

Crankcase fill at the breater.. Trans fill by the shifter, level plug on left side.. Hyds fill on front of hyd cover.. has dipstick.. Diffy fill on rear of tractor.. level check on lower left axle trumpet... All drains along the bottom from front to rear..

The crankcase will be 5.5 or 6 qts.. keep inmind you need some for the air filter.

i seem to remember the diffy being 8qts.. and 6 each for the hyds and tranny.. Mind you.. My book is at home.. and I'm at work.

Both TSC and NAPA will have your oil filter available in a reference book.

Spin on is a fl-1 ( napa 1515?? )I think.. standard ford filter used forever.. But if you have a canister.. stick with it... NO reason to change.. My NAA has the spin on.. the 660 has the canister.. Both make a mess when changing.. And the canister is a bit tougher to resist rocks kicked up on it... I've actually seen spin on filters leak due to can perferation from a thrown bit of debri from a mower..

I *believe* the canister insert is a napa 1004.. again.. I'm not near my book.... Both NAPA and tsc hwill have a application chart though...

I am pretty sure that the trans is 10 qt.

Also, my OPINION is that the trans and diff should be 80w90 or 75w90 gear oil. The new tractors all use the thin stuff, but they were made for it. The old iron was made for the thicker stuff to fill the clearances.

Like I said, it my opinion, others will have equally valid opinions. Mine just happens to be supported by the original manuals. Why change? Unless you have leaks between the compartments....

Capacities (by the book) are as follows:
Cooling System - 15 qts
Engine Oil (with filter change) - 5 qts (remember the air cleaner as SouNdguy said).
Tranny - 4 speed - 6 1/2 qts
Hydraulic Reservoir - 9 qts
Diffy - 11 1/2 qts
Hope that helps.

Can you please turn off your Caps Lock! in reply to SKFOOTER, 06-19-2006 12:18:21
Believe it or not your posts are easier to read if they are in small case letters with capital letters used when appropriate. Using all caps is the same as shouting. I can hear you just fine with small case letters.

We all like our tractors but we usually discuss them in normal tones.
All caps is considered SHOUTING.
