Dad wants to trade a John Deere 420 for a 7710.I would like to get an 8000 although the 8000 is less comfortable we are in need of a better backup tractor for posthole digging picking up bales and put on a grain auger. I think the 8000 would be better for that. Dad just likes the cab on the 7710 as do I. The 8000 is cheaper but older. So what are your opinions guys?

I have used 8000s since they new they are mostly reliable but the 7710 is better for utility work.

7710 is a good one much better than the other old camel, we've had probably 20 fords over the years and this was one of my favourites almost as much power as 8210 and faster on the road .

I think you'll find the 7710 to be the better tractor for what you're describing. It would certainly be a more versatile tractor with a far better cab, better transmission, more usable 3-point hitch for utility work, and the FWD option. The 8000 in my opinion fits the same category as any other big old 2-wheel drive of that vintage. Big stupid power. I wouldn't want to live in that cab for 10 hours a day..... A stationary power unit is one thing, but not a field/utility tractor. 7710, all the way on this one.

While i wouldn't mind having an 8000 in the barn as a refurb project.. i agree with the others.. the new 7710 especially a later series will be the preferable work tractor.

Prior to purchasing my 7610s.. I had looked at a ford 8000 with a pto issue for 4900$.. the 'stuck engaged' pto was a deal breaker at the time for me, as I needed an immediate mowing tractor. .. I had also been looking at a minty 5000.. but the wifey like dthe 7610s better... se we comprimised and got the one she wanted!

Two of the biggest things to watch on the 8/9000 and 86/9600 are the shift likage and forks and the steering motor. The steering motors aren't available new anymore, and you can get enough leverage on the shift levers to bend or break the linkage or shift forks. That said, stop and think about it... if those tractors are still running more than 25 years after they were built... But I'd take the 7710 (I or II) over an 8000. It would have more than enough grunt for what you need, and the cabs, especially the series II, are real nice to have. Plus the fact that it could have fwa, better resale, and is more maneuverable.

Hi bengubbels,

Stay away from the 8000. They have more than their share of birth defects from the factory.
