I have a 640 with a loader. I don't know why Ford put hotrod first and reverse gears in their tractors. My 8N is the same way. Can I swap a 5 speed in? Did ford make different ring and pinions for this? I want to slow it down so it is more suitable for loader work. Thanks

Yes, you can drop a 5 speed from a 660 right in there. That's the way I'd go if I was looking to upgrade a 600 series. The Sherman combo would work too, but you won't have live PTO from the sherman. I would look for a 5 speed with live PTO. 660 is the number. Otherwise, I'd trade up for a more useful tractor. That said, I can't imagine an application that would require a slower 1st gear than that 5 speed had. Our old 860 was so slow in first that it just never got used. Third, fourth and fifth were the main gears that got used in that tractor. I guess if you were doing a lot of over the road work, and didn't need live PTO, then the Sherman over/under would be good too. It would give you more speed on the road. Those old 5 speeds topped out around 12 mph.....

Andy,

I sent you an e-mail. I have the Sherman you need. Cheaper and more versatile than the 5 speed.

The 600 series was also available with a 5 speed tranny. Those were called 650 and 660 models. The same rear gears were used. I would think that if you can find a junked 650 or 660 with good transmission you could do the swap. If you're lucky enough to find a 660, change out the trans and the dual clutch so you'll also have live pto.

I have a 5 speed in an 800 series (model 850) and first gear is very slow, but I believe the 800 series has a bigger rear gear, too so a 600 with 5 speed might not be as slow as my 850.

A Sherman step-down or combo would also slow you down.

Best way to do that is with a sherman combo tranny in front of what you have now. I have an 841 with a 3 speed sherman in it and low gear is so slow if you can get the traction you can watch the side walls of the tires flex under the power.

Old said, "if you can get the traction"

Yeah, that's the one thing my tractor needs! It already has 3000# of BH and it probably needs 2-3000# more.

Last I checked John Smith of 8N fame had some Sherman's available. >Link

Here's>Link a link to his sherman page - good stuff there.

My 841 does well, fluid in both the rear tires and a back blade with 6 suit case weights hanging on it. I've push over trees 6 inches in diameter more then one with it. The loader on it is a very heavy duty one and before we had to replace the hyd pump I would pull up to a car the size of an old chev nova and pick it up. Can't do it since the pump was replaced because of the new relief valve.
