The tractor is a '64 4000 SOS 172D engine I'm appearantly a member of a big club. I also have rebuilt engine and now have a dripping rear seal. I was careful about installing the neoprene seal and dipped the side tiangle shape seals in oil; applied rtv on edges of lip seal and side seals and it leaked. Whats the latest installation advice? I don't think the Hyd. pump drive gear plate is the problem, but I did look at it. I'm probably gonna replace with aftermarket Felpro rear seal from local parts place. I even changed to straight 40 weight oil trying to slow down the leak; didn't help. What is original equipment on the oil filler cap? Mine look like a radiator cap and I'm not sure if that's what is suppose to be there. bjr

I was told there are two different sizes of the side strips, the first ones I had were a loose fit, I asked for the "older model" strips, and they have held up. I also am using the rope seal instead of the neoprene, I wish I knew of the neoprene, the rope seal was a bear to install. Jim

Jim, the stupid New Holland PAL system doesn't specify what year on the rope or neoprene, but if I remember correctly, the rope came first and later after 1959 the crank was changed and the neoprene came into play. The crank for the late seal had hash marks cut into the seal area to pump the oil back into the pan. I seem to remember no hash use rope.

Did you get the neoprene seal in correct. The flange on the seal will go toward the engine. The flange is pretty easy to get wrong because it is not very tall. Also the ends where the seal mates will need to be pushed around to a point where it does not align with the bearing cap and crankcase mating surface.

bjr, where did you get the side strips? New Holland has shipped some funny looking side strips that don't work. Had a fellow to call me last year had a 172" gas down 3 times and wanted some old style strips. I dug some out and it fixed his problem. Last time I saw this was at a New Holland dealership, down 2 times on a 172" gas. I called the vendor for these that supplies Tisco and they still have the original style that gets bigger when oil soaked.

Is that big club for 172D's or leaky rears? (Uh, that didn't come out quite right..)

The wedge seals will continue to swell and leak less over time. Might want to wait a while? Did you tighten down the pan gasket? Mine was torqued to spec and leaked like a sieve. More torque and that was that. What oil pressure are you getting?

The original oil fill cap does look like a rad cap. You can still get them new.
