I appreciate all the suggestions regarding the fuel and/or electrical problems with my 871. I began the post almost a month ago. The suggestions were all helpful - get rid of the fuel filter, get a real 12V coil, check for spark, etc.

The problem ended up being corroded plug wires at the distributor end, which was compounded by my bending the clip on the distributor shaft during this spring's tune up. The rotor was spinning in an oval instead of circular motion. How that worked perfect for the first hour or so I'll never understand. I had a new distributor and set of plug wires, but I was going to wait until the tractor was painted before installing them.

Now the tractor has new plug wires, rotor, distributor, real 12V coil(no series resistor) and no fuel filter. I took all the suggestions as 'lessons learned' by others with similar problems and am confident they have prevented future problems.

Thanks much,
Mike NAA36663

No Fuel Filter? in reply to NAA36663, 07-10-2006 17:49:44
I too think learning from other peoples experiences pays. I don't quit understand when you said removed fuel filter though. Could you expand on that a little? bjr

I could not find the origional post, but I think the discussion here was involving an aftermarket paper fuel filter. Not any of the OE equipment filters.

The reason for removeing the fuel filter is simple. Most fuel filters are made for systems with a fuel pump and tractors most of the time have no pump. So if the filter is made to have say 7-15PSI pushing the fuel they do not will not work correctly on a gravity type fuel system and will soon cauce hair pulling problems because they will restrict the fuel flow engough to cause problems. Yes at first they work ok but as soon as they get a little water/junk in them they restrict way to much and thats where the problems begain. Now if you use a fuel filter made for a motorcycle or lawn mower they work ok but thats because they are made for gravity fuel system not fuel systems with pumps

My original post was on 6/22/06 at 18:00:29 (which is now on page 11). The advice I followed was responses to that original post. HTH.

I too would like to know why you removed the fuel filter. I added one to my fuel system to keep trash out of the carb, and have had no problems with it.

As old said.. if you use a paper filter made for an application that has a fuel pump.. the flow may be restricted. If you absolutely have to have an add on filter due to trash that you can't adress the proper way.. get a lawnmower filter.. they are made for gravity feed systems..

Dave see answer I gave BJR. I will say yes they will work for a little while and then in a month or year you will be posting about problems with your carb not getting gas. BTDT and found out the hard way fuel filters on gravity system don't work well unless they are made for gravity type fuel system

Sorry, my mistake. It is never good to assume anything. In this case, my assumption was that since we are dealing with gravity flow systems on these tractors, a gravity flow fuel filter is understood. Get one at your favorite Lawn and Garden Center. Mine has been working on a 640 for 11 months, and a JD 316 for several years.

Yep that type does ok but most people go to the auto parts store and buy the run of the mill fuel filter for a car or truck and then 2 weeks later can't figure out why they have fuel flow problems. I prefer fuel filters for motor cycles but either one works. And that is if I even try to put one on, I figure if it wasn't there in the first place why add it plus its ugly no matter where you put it and gives one most thing to go wrong or get hung up on a limb etc when useing the tractor in the field
