I am rebuilding a 800 series tractor with a 172 cubic inch engine. the rear main seal bearing/carrier has two groves in it. One for a rope seal and one for a lip seal. when I took it off it had the lip seal in it. The rebuild gasket kit included the rope seal. Should I use the rope seal ? Or the lip seal, or both the rope seal and lip seal?
thanks.

If the surface of the crank izz smooth then i would use the lip seal. Once you install the rear main cap spray soapy water on the rear and blow lite compressed air on the inside and look for leaks. I have never had a leaker if it passed this test

Rob, look at the rear main cap again. One groove is an oil relief, it should have two hole machined in it for oil to go to pan. IMHO if your crank is "fluted" where the seal goes I guess you could go with the neoprene seal. I believe if you take your time and roll the rope seal correctly you will be happier. Also, what year is it? There are different wedge seals starting in late 1958.

I have a 1955 ford 860. Also the crank has been turned down 10 thousands.

The rope seal will last longer, but when it starts leaking has to be replaced with the lip seal,(unless you want to pull the crank),quite a pain in the a-- to do.I quess its a matter of preference.I replaced my rope seal last year with the lip seal and has not leaked a drop since then. And if it does all I have to do is drop the pan an slide in a new seal.

Seal problems also in reply to alg, 07-16-2006 07:33:41
I've installed two seals on a 172D both neoprene. The first was a TISCO kit seal. The last was Felpro with pins in the side seals. I followed all written instructions and still have a few drops every few minutes. Just have to live with it, I guess. Real frustrating, though. bjr
