If you check on the right side of the trans, opposite the serial number location on the left, there should be a series number stamped in. All the demonstrators had exchanged transmissions. The serial number of the tractor the trans was removed from was ground off. The trans was updated and stamped on the right side with the rebuild series control number. When that trans was reinstalled in another tractor, that tractors serial number was stamped into that trans. The removed one"s serial number was ground off and the rebuild/update/stamping cycle repeated. That resulted in red trans in gold and gold trans in red. Some were repainted some not. Imagine the boondoggle going on at the time. My gold demo has a gold to red to some gold on the trans. Bought it from the original owner and it was never touched. That"s why it is sooo easy to fake a gold demo. Get a casting dated "59 SOS tractor, grind off the serial number and restamp, stamp some numbers on the right side, shoot it gold and black and have a restored gold demonstrator.

Rick, I have one of those never touched Gold 871 with a Red transmission and also a red tractor 871 with a gold transmission. Take plenty of pictures before you start restoration. Who has the correct gold? Would it be Roger Elwood who sold one last year for $24,500.00 possibly had the best looking gold. I have the lower grill panel that Roger painted gold for a sample and its a very light shade of gold that looks good.
