I recently bought an old Ford tractor and went to Mr. Smith's web site to identify it exactly. The numbers are "631", then <>152376<> below that. So it is a 601 series, but it has grey sheet metal with red frame and engine. It has a LIVE PTO, 4 speed. All help in idenifying will be appreciated

If a 1954 NAA doesn't have a pto what will have to done to add one?

Is it as simple as buying the pto shaft with the end bearing and seal block?

Lets try and explain it this way.
A 631 does not come with PTO. Just like it does not come with a tach; temp gauge; lights; or draw bar hitch. They were all options that could be added at a extra cost.
A 641 is the same tractor as your 631 but all the above is standard equipment.
This would be the same as a bottom line Ford pickup does not come with a radio. It can be added as a option for a extra cost but a top line pickup has radio as standard equipment. They are both pickups just one has more standard options included.

Now your tractor will have live hyd system. The hyd lift will work as long as the engine is running because the pump is mounted on the engine. Older tractors like the 2N and 9N had the hyd pump on the trans so the clutch had to be out for it to work.

Your tractor does not have live PTO which means if you press in clutch to stop the tractor the PTO is going to stop. With these kinds of tractors it is best to use a over running clutch on the PTO shaft of a brush cutter because the force of the blades turning will give power to the wheels even with the clutch in.

From the 'standard and optional equipment chart' in the 601-801 operator's manual (SE 6085-C): Model 631-STANDARD EQUIPMENT; 4-Speed Trans., Hyd. System and Three Point Linkage. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT; Auxiliary Trans., Power Steer., Power Adj. Wheels, and 540 RPM P.T.O. The later manual (SE 6085-F) adds two more options; Heavy Duty Front End, H.D. Clutch.

Have to agree with John since the only way a 4 speed will have live PTO is if it has some sort of add on thing to do that. And as per the book it shouldn't even have a PTO. The book says "3" 4 speed tranny with out PTO so if it has a PTO someone added it on at some point and time

Thanks guys--major misunderstanding on my part! What is a live PTO? The 3-pt hookup can be raised and lowered so long as the engine is running whether or no the PTO is engaged.

>>The 3-pt hookup can be raised and lowered so long as the engine is running whether or no the PTO is engaged<<

What you just described is LIVE HYDRAULICS which is different from live pto.

Live pto means (basically) the pto operates whether or not I've stopped the forward motion of the tractor by pushing the clutch.

Live pto in the Fords of that era was achieved by means of a dual clutch which was only available on certain models equipped with a 5 speed transmission. Not ALL 5 speed tractors have live pto, only the ones with a 6 in the middle of the model number (660, 860, 960, 661, 861, 961)

Live PTO if it has one since it shouldn't is. When you push down the clutch half way the tractor stops moveing but the PTO shaft doesn't stop, then when you push the clutch down all the way the tractor and PTO stop. All ford tractors starting with the Jubilee had live hyds but only some of the ones with 5 speed and sos trannys had live PTOs. Sorry forgot to say that right, the 631 as per the book didn't have a PTO on them

back to being confused--this one definitely has a PTO--i have used a brush hog on it. The scratchs on the sheet metal leave me wondering about the repaint job, though that is a possibility.

Well that just means at one time some one added a PTO to it, or its what is called a mutt tractor which means it was made from 2 or 3 scrap tractors to be one good tractor. I have a couple of those mutt tractors that I have put togeather my self from 2 or 3 junk tractors and now how good tractors and parts of others

You have a 1961 631 that has been repainted the wrong color.
It will have a 4 speed but does NOT have live PTO. Live PTO only came in some 5 speed models.

Live PTO is when you can push the clutch down 1/2 way and the tractor stops forward motion but the PTO still turns.

All SOS models were live PTO too, as well as independant PTO. Gosh! Now I opened a can of worms didn't I :-)
